Richard Siken's Stroke His work is often praised for its unique blend of lyricism and narrative which allows readers to explore their own feelings while also gaining insight into issues such as love and power that are relevant today more than ever before. Throughout his career Richard Siken has consistently demonstrated an innovative approach to writing poetry that is both emotionally charged yet thought provoking. The poem is both a tribute to his recovery journey as well as an exploration into how illness can redefine one's sense of identity and purpose in life. Despite this setback, he eventually recovered enough to write again and on December 4th 2020 released his first post-stroke poem “Real Estate” on after announcing it on his Facebook page the day prior.
In March 2019, Siken suffered a stroke that left him unable to speak or write for nearly two years. His 2021 release Blue Jupiters expands upon these same ideas with a darker twist as he reflects on personal struggles while never losing sight of hope. In War of the Foxes, Siken's second book published in 2015, he explores themes such as love and power with a unique blend of lyricism and narrative. The collection was praised for its exploration of intense emotions through vivid imagery and powerful language.
His debut collection Crush was awarded the Yale Series of Younger Poets prize in 2004. Since 2004, Siken has released three collections of poetry – Crush (Yale University Press), War of the Foxes (Copper Canyon Press), and most recently Blue Jupiters (Copper Canyon Press).
Throughout his career, he has taught at various universities including Arizona State University and Columbia College Chicago. Born in California in 1975, Siken earned a BA from the University of Arizona before receiving an MFA from the University of Montana. Richard Siken is an acclaimed poet, author, and professor whose work has been widely celebrated for its distinct style, emotionally charged language, and complex themes.
